Studio 60 is on Netflix, which means I’ve glutted on it lately. The show is about an SNL-type sketch show with most of the drama centering around the head writer and his struggles to get the sketches written on time. One of the recurring things on the show is a clock that he has in his office. Every week it counts down to the start of the show. It’s a great device for showing the audience the building pressure on the head writer to get the show to come together on time. It’s disturbing though to watch as they celebrate a great show coming together, only to see the clock start back over, counting down the days until the next show. This reminds me of teaching: the preparation, the classes, the relief of the end of the day — and then that disturbing thought, I have to do this again in 23 hours and 59 minutes …
